Psalms, Songs and Sonnets: Feel the Groove - from Baroque to Jazz

May 2017

Want to experience the energy and passion of baroque and jazz music together? With marvelous melodies built around texts from sacred and secular literature, guest director Larry Bach and Singers in Accord will take you on a choral journey to feel the groove. Delight in the harmonic, rhythmic, and improvisational drive shared by these two musical genres that originated more than 200 years apart.

The concert program includes choruses from Handel's Chandos Anthems #9 and #11 with Singers in Accord accompanied by a period orchestra. The Jazz pairing with these anthems includes George Shearing's iconic "Songs and Sonnets", setting seven of Shakespeare's sonnets to the Shearing's subtle jazz style, and two of George Gershwin's music theater hits, "Fascinating Rhythm" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It".
